Research News

TSANZ Member Success with NHMRC Grant Funding

TSANZ wishes to extend our congratulations to the TSANZ members who were awarded NHMRC Investigator Grants. We would like to highlight some of this exciting research below.

Dr Narelle Cox from Monash University for "Improving access to non-pharmacological treatment in chronic respiratory disease". From Dr Cox, "Pulmonary rehabilitation, a program of exercise and education, is the primary non-pharmacological treatment recommendation for people with chronic lung disease. It is proven to improve symptoms, function and wellbeing, and reduce hospital admissions and healthcare use, however fewer than 10% of Australians who would benefit have ever attended a program due to key barriers limiting program access. The program of work supported by this Investigator Grant aims to improve access to non-pharmacological treatment, specifically pulmonary rehabilitation, for people with chronic lung disease by:
- Evaluating the impact of alternative models of rehabilitation delivery on patient, health system and economic outcomes;
- Driving implementation of remote models of rehabilitation delivery by evaluating and addressing barriers to service implementation within Australia and in different healthcare systems internationally; and
- Engaging with consumers to co-design and test innovative disease management pathways."

Dr Kathryn Ramsey from the University of Western Australia for "Improving prognosis and quality of life in children with muco-obstructive lung disease". From Dr Ramsey "Dr Ramsey, who is Co-Head of Children’s Lung Health at the Wal-yan Respiratory Research Centre – a powerhouse partnership between Telethon Kids Institute, Perth Children’s Hospital and Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation - has been awarded a prestigious Investigator Grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council. Dr Ramsey will lead a five-year research program focused on improving the prognosis and quality of life of children with cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis. The project will see the establishment of a new longitudinal surveillance cohort of children with bronchiectasis in WA. This study will deliver critical evidence needed to understand mechanisms of disease, identify treatment targets, inform clinical practice, and ultimately improve health outcomes in children with bronchiectasis in Australia and beyond."

Our membership have also had success with the recent NHMRC Centres of Research Excellence Scheme, with "Transformative Funding for Pulmonary Fibrosis Research". Information about this CRE has been provided below:
"An Australian team of world-leaders in pulmonary fibrosis (PF) research have been awarded $2.5m by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council toward a Centre of Research Excellence (CRE). Combined with generous support from an Australian philanthropic family, this will transform PF research in Australia over the next five years.

The goal of the CRE is to improve health outcomes for PF and to promote and translate PF research into policy and practice; developing more effective, personalised approaches to diagnosis and management. The newly funded CRE builds upon the work of the Centre of Research Excellence in Pulmonary Fibrosis(2017-2023). Congratulations to Prof Tamera Corte, Prof Anne Holland, Prof Dan Chambers, Prof Phil Hansbro, Prof Jo Dickinson, Prof Andrew Palmer, Prof Yuben Moodley, Prof Joseph Powell, A/Prof Luke Knibbs, A/Prof Natasha Smallwood and the whole team!"

Cystic Fibrosis WA Post Graduate Top Up Scholarship

Cystic Fibrosis Western Australia (CFWA) is a charitable not-for-profit association incorporated in WA, whose focus is on research and services to support those living with cystic fibrosis (CF), their families and carers. Research is vital in the ongoing pursuit of a cure, ensuring effective treatments for all people living with CF, enhancing current treatments; and helping reduce the burden of disease, particularly as decades of research success and treatment advances are enabling people to live longer with CF.

'CFWA’s Post Graduate Top Up Scholarship is designed to encourage and support students who are conducting CF related research for a higher degree (PhD, Masters or equivalent).  These grants have helped contribute to the exemplary CF research specialist community we have in Australia.  We currently have a scholarship available to an eligible student working in the CF field.  For this particular grant, study that addresses management of the burden of disease (including treatment adherence, self-management, other) and/or aging with CF (co-morbidities, mental health, other) is of particular interest, although applicants in other fields of study may apply.  This scholarship is administered through the Australian Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust (ACFRT) on behalf of CFWA. The Scholarship is for $12,500 per annum for a maximum of three years. Conditions apply.

SINFONIA Singing for breathing trial

SINFONIA is a multi-site, online singing for breathing trial for people with COPD or ILD and their caregivers. This study is led by a research team at Monash University (A/Prof Natasha Smallwood) and aims to investigate if group singing classes assist with improvement in symptom management and overall wellbeing. The trial is not just limited to people in Victoria, as people from around Australia can be referred or self-refer to take part. In case you are interested in telling your patients about the study, the eligibility criteria are:

  • Patients aged over 18 with a confirmed diagnosis of COPD or ILD on lung function (within last 2 years) or CT (last 5 years)
  • Stable on treatment for at least 4 weeks (i.e. no new or changed cardiorespiratory medications or hospital admissions for COPD or ILD)
  • Breathless: mMRC ≥ 2
  • NOT currently participating in pulmonary rehabilitation
  • Capable and willing to give informed consent
  • Carers aged over 18 years may also participate

Participants in the online singing group will attend a 90-minute online group singing session once a week, for 12 weeks. People randomised to the control group (delayed entry) will be offered to join the singing sessions after 3 months.

Patients or clinicians can refer by contacting our team’s research assistant Catherine Buchan:  c.buchan@alfred.org.au.
